Spaceship Earth
Corrugated plastic, cable ties Sculpture 2024This work is based on the 2,1-Goldberg polyhedron where the edges have been replaced with rhombic pieces of colored corrugated plastic.
Background and Inspiration
The title is from the same phrase popularized in the 1960s by R. Buckminster "Bucky" Fuller. Fuller also popularized the geodesic dome, which has a related construction. This piece is an abstract model of the Earth make from 210 pieces: 60 green pieces and 150 blue pieces. About 71% of the pieces are blue, which is about the same percentage of the Earth's surface covered by water. We are individuals, yet travel through space together, inhabitants on and caretakers of the same tiny planet we call Earth.
