Cosine Approximations
Digital Print
2018
This piece shows the first non-constant approximations to the cosine function using its Taylor series expansion about $x=0$ and was inspired by the paper by Dalthorp in this issue. Because the partial sums of the series oscillate between over and under approximations, the regions above the over approximations are disjoint from the regions below the under approximations.
Background and Inspiration
This work was originally done for use as cover art for the April 2018 issue of Mathematics Magazine. This is the seventeenth of 25 original artworks I created for the journal Mathematics Magazine during 2015–2019.
